'My Introduction to Wood Carving'.

“Come and have a go,” said my friend of 20 years as he             stood in front of the display of Carvings by the  'Ringwood Woodcarvers’ at the “Bygone Days” show in     North Gorley near Ringwood in  July 2008.  (You'd think  that,   after having known him for all that time, I would   have known that he was a wood carver.)

"I certainly haven’t got the patience to do that,” I replied.

“Come on,” he said. “It’s all set up, I’ll show you what to do.”

I refused for a couple of days  but  eventually  I followed him into the demonstration area beside the display and he showed me his latest project.

"What's it to be"? I asked, only to be told, "A gardening glove to go with my Hedge Trimmer".

Here's the 'Glove' as a wooden blank before I started on it.

Well, now I've heard it all.  A carved glove and a carved hedge trimmer.

Whatever next?

He showed me how to use a 'V' tool to outline the shape and the 'Gouge' to remove the bulk.

Then, with trepidation, I put chisel to wood.

I ‘V’ tooled the pencilled outline and then used the gouge and mallet  to remove   a lot   of the bulk.

I worked on it for a couple of hours and surprisingly enjoyed it.

He seemed to think that I had a flair for it and suggested I visit the next Club meeting to carve the introductory piece just to see how I would get on.

The finished 'Gardening Glove'.

As you can see, carving is not just about statues, animals, birds and faces.

It is just a matter of envisaging the finished article and anything goes.
